Unsolicited Mentorship
If I had any advice to give someone starting out in this business it would be: find a mentor that matches your style. Perhaps without realising it themselves, I’ve been blessed by two such incredible women. One of them is a client who never hesitates to encourage me and offer advice – simply out of the goodness of her heart. She is one of those awesome Sisters who, through her own experience in starting a business, is compelled to offer advice and supportive words of wisdom. In fact, she is the reason that I continue gaining confidence in placing well-deserved, monetary value to my working hours. She encourages me to never apologise for the amount by divulging all kinds of explanations and reasons. (This always blew me away, because whilst saying all this, she was paying me!) And beyond that, she is one of the kindest, most pure-hearted individuals I’ve ever met. It’s an honour to call her Friend, as well as Client.
The other is a lovely lady I met when making proposals to other entrepreneurs on Upwork. Although our interview together didn’t manifest into a work relationship, she really shows up for me when I need to run something by her or ask advice. She holds other women in incredibly high esteem and is nothing short of a powerhouse businesswoman, mom, wife, and now, someone I can call “my mentor.”
I honestly cannot say enough about these two unintentional mentors. I adore and hold deep respect for them both.
I’ve also learnt a lot just by doing. Sometimes the lessons hurt a bit, but mostly, the learning of them feels exhilarating.
And you know what the most amazing and exciting thing about being a woman business owner is? The awareness that there are so many others out there who “get it,” and that through their own hard-learnt lessons, have the compassion in their hearts to help us newbies avoid the pitfalls. Seek them out, Sister. You will find.
I feel an overwhelming sense of Gratitude right now.
